Antivirus on Linux
Do you need antivirus on Linux, and what does ClamAV actually do?
Do I need antivirus?
Typically, Linux users don’t install antivirus for everyday use. Keep Linux and your apps updated, and download software from sources you trust.
Linux can still get malware. Be careful with unexpected downloads, browser extensions, and commands someone tells you to paste into a terminal.
Is antivirus available for Linux?
Yes, though there are fewer options for home users than on Windows. ClamAV is one free, open-source option.
What is ClamAV?
ClamAV (opens in a new tab) is a free, open-source antivirus tool. You can use it to scan files and folders for known threats.

ClamAV is useful for checking files, but don’t expect the same automatic, all-round protection you might be used to from antivirus on Windows.
ClamAV’s threat database needs to stay updated so it can recognise newer threats.
How ClamAV scanning works (opens in a new tab)
A clean scan isn’t a guarantee
No scanner catches everything. A clean result doesn’t prove a download is safe. Keep using trusted sources and keep backups of files you care about.
