What is Steam?
Steam is Valve’s game store and launcher. You can buy games, keep them updated, and play with friends from one app.
It has a Linux version, so you can sign in with your existing account and keep your library. Which games you can play depends on their Linux support or how well they work with Proton.
Getting Steam
Check your distro’s software manager for Steam. If it isn’t available there, follow your distro’s instructions or use Steam on Flathub (opens in a new tab).
Valve also provides a Linux download on the Steam website (opens in a new tab). It’s a .deb package for Debian and Ubuntu-based distros.
What about Windows games?
Some games have their own Linux version. For many others, Steam uses Proton to run the Windows version on Linux. Steam handles downloading Proton for you.
Not every game works. Some multiplayer games use anti-cheat software that doesn’t allow Linux players to join.
Check your games on ProtonDB before buying. It collects reports from other players, including how well a game runs and any fixes they needed. Look for recent reports from people using a Linux PC.
