Gaming on Linux
What is Proton?
How Windows games can run on Linux.
Proton is Valve’s tool for running Windows games on Linux. It’s built into Steam, so many games can work even if their developers haven’t made a Linux version.
How does it work?
Proton translates what a Windows game needs into something Linux can understand. It builds on Wine, a project that helps Windows software run on other operating systems.
You don’t need to install Windows or buy another copy of a game you already own on Steam.
Do I need to install it?
Steam downloads Proton when it’s needed. For most people, the version Steam provides is enough to get started.
Will every game work?
Many games work well, but some have problems or won’t run. Multiplayer games can also be blocked by their anti-cheat software.
Check ProtonDB for recent reports from other Linux players. These can help you find out how a game runs before you buy it.
