Preparing to install

Get your files, computer and USB ready before installing Linux.

Picked a distro you like? Here are a few things to get ready before installing it. Each distro has its own installer, so use its official guide when you’re ready.

Back up your files

Copy anything you want to keep to another drive or cloud storage. Remember your documents, photos, Downloads and game saves.

Open a few files from the backup to check they’re there. Keep the backup somewhere other than the drive you’ll install Linux on.

Check your apps and hardware

Make sure the apps you rely on have Linux versions or alternatives you’re happy to use.

If your distro offers a live desktop, try it from a USB first. Check your Wi-Fi, sound, display and any devices you use regularly.

Decide whether to keep Windows

You can replace Windows or keep it alongside Linux. Keeping both is called dual booting, and it needs enough drive space for both systems.

Decide which you want before starting, then follow your distro’s instructions for that choice.

Have everything ready

Enough storage: Check your distro’s requirements and leave room for your apps and files.
Power: Plug in your laptop before you start.
The official guide: Open it on your phone or another device so you can still read it while installing.
